What’s your favourite travel story?

It’s always hard to choose a favourite. From hiking through California’s majestic landscapes, to taking in the sights and sounds of hillside cities in the Himalayas, to discovering the many facets of Bali, every journey has offered something unique. But one memory that stands out is a private tour of a little-known monastery on the outskirts of Florence, Italy, that happened via a string of happy coincidences.

I still remember the gentle warmth of the monk who welcomed me and my husband, and the serene stillness of the courtyard where Carthusian monks had walked for centuries. To stand in the cloisters, completely alone yet surrounded by history and calm, was an extraordinary gift. For me, true luxury is found in these rare moments — when we pause, slow down, and open ourselves to the quiet magic of the world.

What is the one thing you don’t travel without?

Before I leave, I rely on the same trusty packing list I've used for years — there’s nothing like physically checking items off to make sure nothing gets left behind. And I never travel without a collapsible tote: a sturdy canvas one for short getaways, and an expandable nylon version for longer trips. It always comes in handy, whether for market finds, day trips, or the inevitable extra bag for the trip home.
